Alternate Endings: What Would You Do?

I don't really understand why someone would want to write fan fiction.  I found this glossary and one reason came to view and that was an alternate ending. http://www.storynook.net/Glossary.html

There are lots of books where I wish I could change the ending: Harry Potter and the Half Blood PrinceUndead and Unfinished volume are two that come to mind.

For what books would you like to rewrite the ending??  If you would like to say why and/or how?

I don't mean that you should rewrite the whole thing but, a summary: for example for the Harry Potter above I might say, I liked Dumbeledore and I would change so he had not really died and Snape wasn't the bad seed but just had hemorrhoids and that's why he was such an ass.

Tomorrow July 29, Julia Rachel Barrett is guest posting with Why I love science fiction and kick ass women.  And, for first prize we will be giving away a signed copy of her new book Daughters of Persephone(mailed from Julia) and a Mermaid bookmark and a copy of Captured, a previous publication.  Te contest will be from 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM by comment.  You must be a fan of THIS blog and will get an extra entry for subscribing to Julia!  Do one entry for the regular and and for the extra entry put in a second comment of Julia's post.

  3. I was never bog on rewriting endings until the last five minutes of my beloved LOST. Though the Matrix Revolutions pushed me close.

Since this is a paranormal blog, thought I'd suggest my snark-filled article on the Top Ten Hottest Male Vampires of All Time, just posted at my site.

  5. I'm friends with lots of fanfiction writers and I read a decent bit of it for certain fandoms, so I could try to explain it a bit. While the alternate ending theory is true in some cases, I don't really see that in a majority of fanfiction. Most of the time, the writer really likes the characters and wants to do more with them.

Having written both original fiction and fanfiction, in my experience it is much harder to write good fanfiction because you have to get inside the head of someone else's character for a story to be truly good. Some people enjoy the world of a book/tv show/game and want to explore it perhaps with original characters. If a fanfiction writer thinks he or she has a good feel for the characters, they may put them in an alternate universe to experiment with how those same characters with their personalities would work in a different setting.

Fanfiction I write is mostly what I write, many books/shows/games don't show everything, choosing to skip over "downtime". Some writers write stories about what might have happened during said downtime. Some authors write "crack fics" as little funny and nonsensical stories, like making up an extended joke about the characters. They know they are being silly. Finally, some stories try to fillin what the author thinks could have happened before or after what the original work covered in the lives of the characters.

  6. aenaithia - thank you for the eloquent reply to my question. It was very helpful and informative.

I understand liking characters so much that you don't want to let them go.

PLEASE NOTE, This is an AWARD FREE BLOG unless it's the international This of That Society wanting to bestow the International Blogger of the Year award a big trophy and a brand new Jaguar.
I am no longer accepting the kindly intentioned chain-letter type awards bloggers give each other and then have to give to ten other bloggers. No time but lots of appreciation...
