Product DescriptionImage via WikipediaAva Delaney calls herself a hybrid—a living, breathing human who happens to have vampire poison running through her veins. The only thing greater than her thirst for human blood is her capacity for guilt. She does her best to avoid the human world, for everyone's sake.
When Ava accidentally enslaves a human while saving him from a vampire, she realises she has to look for help setting him free. Despite her misgivings, she expands her world but finds herself dragged into a possible vampire civil war. With the help of some new friends with ambiguous loyalties, she tries to find a way to keep her human, and herself, alive.
Thirst is the first in a series of paranormal novellas. Now comes with preview chapters of Taunt (Ava Delaney #2).
A surprisingly fun novella about a young woman's search for an identity as a human or a vampire or something in between. Ava's mother was bitten by a vampire while pregnant. But she died after Ava was born leaving Ava to be raised by her grandmother. Sadly she was raised to believe herself evil and demonic; a bit of Jeaniene Frost's Cat mixed with Ivy from Kim Harrison's Rachel Morgan series.
I was more than two thirds of the way through the book when I realized we were in Ireland. I didn't know until then; thinking the occasional vernacular was perhaps British-Canadian although I had never heard it.
But you have to love the young, cute and utterly quirky Ava with her OCD counting rituals that help her make it through the day without snacking (a new diet strategy, friends) on anyone. Another of her strategies is drinking quarts of milk which, if you think of it as a substitute for blood makes some sense. She is confused and kind to the poor young man she accidentally enthralls and undeniably attracted toPeter who, while he hates them desperately is dating the most powerful vampire's daylight administrative assistant. The vampires we meet are all imbalanced or idiotic, laughing maniacally and behaving as if the only thing of any importance to them is blood, even if they have just fed. There is a "council" which needs a little more work and the vampire poison mechanism could be helped too.
Except for hints of loose behavior on the part of her neighbor and a few heated moments between her and the vampire hunter, Peter, the novel is pretty clean.
Lots of fun. A few bugs that will be worked out in further volumes.
