Description:
Book one of The Cat Star Chronicles
Captain Jacinth “Jack” Rutland has been searching the galaxy for her kidnapped sister, Ranata, for six long, fruitless years. Tired, bitter, and avoiding romance out of necessity, Jack's quest has brought her to a planet where all women are enslaved, and to rescue her sister, she must first find a man to pose as her own master.
In desperation, she buys Carkdacund “Cat” Tshevnoe, an exotic feline native of the planet Zetith who was enslaved following the war which destroyed his homeworld. Granting him his freedom, Jack enlists Cat's aid, vowing to keep her own feelings for him at bay until her sister is safe.
But Cat is much more than she bargained for. Powerfully seductive and deadly attractive, Cat is living proof that the true reason for the destruction of Zetith had far more to do with love than with war. . . . CherylBrooksOnline.com
Passion-Level: Sizzling
Cliche-Level: much other than the knowledge that in SciFi Romance the Sci-Fi can go wherever but the romance means at least two people will be hooking up.
Age Range: Adults only
An original story with two main characters who fall in love. That is no spoiler or surprise—it's a romance novel in a Sci-fi format. Some fighting, cursing, quite a bit of sex, and some kindness and compassion thrown in. Cat is a slave at auction on a stinky planet. Captain Jack "Jacinth,"a human is searching the Galaxy for her enslaved sister. The planet she tracks her to is a place where all women are slaves and must be chained to a man in public. So, she needs a man she trusts for what could be very dangerous. She finds "Cat" a Zetithian in a slave auction, he is filthy, naked, and partially feline. For all that intro, most of the rest of the book is filled with action and not usually the fighting kind.
Brooks builds a complex interplanetary culture. Sometimes I felt her a bit over-descriptive. But her description of Cat's anatomy is quite perfect as is his anatomy. Jack is a tough nut to crack, doesn't feel confident in her looks and has a deep history of being misused by men. But you will enjoy how Cat purrs his way into her heart and other less metaphoric bodies. But Brooks builds their characters nicely with a lot of verbal interaction.
In the end, the story is touching, a happily ever after we don't always find in Sci-fi.
One thing Brooks brings up is why a space-faring society uses horses and feet instead of technology, a weirdness often witnessed and wondered about in video Sci-Fi. What do we call that, SpacePunk?
This is a fun read—I enjoyed it

Denise MacGregor knows all too well what lurks in the shadows – her best friend is half-vampire Cat Crawfield – and she has already lost more than the average human could bear. But her family’s dark past is wrapped in secrets and shrouded in darkness – and a demon shapeshifter has marked Denise as prey. Now her survival depends on an immortal who craves a taste of her.
He is Spade, a powerful, mysterious vampire who has walked the earth for centuries and is now duty-bound to protect this endangered, alluring human – even if it means destroying his own kind. Denise may arouse his deepest hungers, but Spade knows he must fight his urge to have her as they face the demon nightmare together…
Because once the first drop of crimson falls, they will both be lost.

Trailer
So, you may recall the Zombie fight from At Grave’s End where Cat’s Bestie’s fairly new husband Randy is killed. She leaves the area and ends up in Texas where she meets up with the old vampy crowd, including Cat, at a mechanical bull bar. As some yahoo is about to rape Denise, Spade comes up and decapitates him which further traumatizes Denise.
Months later, Denise is facing the demonic destruction of everyone she loves and is forced to locate an ancestor who totally ticked said demon off. Who else would she call but Cat and Bones. There is one catch, they’ve moved about ninety times and the only guy she can track down is Spade. He agrees to help her and what do you think happens next? Well. You will have to read it to see and that is no hardship.
Jeanine does write love scenes rather nicely, and does a great job here and there is a story with it too! I actually enjoyed this book at least as much as the Cat and Bones, or properly called, Night Huntress Series. Heartily recommended.
Who knows what attracts and binds our hearts to another? It ‘s the mystery about which so much human story is written, filmed, sung, carved or painted. I love the cover too!
In fact we have a certain day approaching dedicated to love. Enjoy your Valentine!

Fairy Love. A German Fairy from a language book for children
An old friend of our family gave me these old books in German from a library sale when I was a kid.
They are one of very few things I've hung onto and I do love them. While I have re-colored this drawing (photoshop copy not the paper copy), the art is beautiful although the colors are fading and the paper yellowing.

Tra ri ra
der Sommer, der is da.
Wir wollen in den Garten
un wollen des Sommers warten.
Ja ja ja,
der Sommer, der ist da.
I don't speak German but Google Translate says this means
[Tra la la]
the one that is summer there.
We do in the garden
nun want to wait for the summer.
Yes yes yes the summer that is there.
I think it means
Tra la la
The season, Summer is here
We want to be in the Garden
No one (un?) wants to wait for Summer
Tra la la
The season, Summer is here
As I look out at the expanses of white and long indigo shadows in my fields I can't begin to imagine summer.
But, I sure wish it were that short season.

THIRD SENTENCE THURSDAY!
Third Sentence Thursday is a weekly meme for curling up with the third sentences of books.
This week's theme is review the sentence from your current read.
1) Take the book you are reading now and post the third sentence
2) Review this sentence anyway you want (funny and silly reviews encouraged)
3) Post a link to your sentence here or if you don't have a blog, just post it in the comments!
4) Prepare for next week's theme: Third Sentence Review (nothing special folks sorry, busy with tests for one last week!)
This week, I am reading a book that is on a "Book Loving Bitches" Blog Tour:
No Rest For The Wicca
T. C. Lotempio
The book is about a former police officer from Homicide who leaves due to a tragic occurence and becomes a Paranormal Investigator.
Please check back for my full review on
Tuesday, February 15.
In the third sentence, our character tells us:
And in my business, the unexpected was commonplace occurrence.
Or, Expect the unexpected. I think in 8 out of 10 businesses, paranormal or otherwise—and in life for that matter, the unexpected is what happens on a good many days.
Sometimes the unexpected is good, winning five bucks on a scratchy lottery ticket, or great, winning a million bucks in the lottery. Finding out your sister, brother or husband got a promotion. Sometimes, as has happened to me lately, it is unexpected bad news.
Now granted, this woman is a half Wicca/half "Bokkor"(some kind of voodoo personage) person with the ability to send ghosts on to where ever they are destined. So, for her the unexpected should be the expected because it is commonplace. Unless she is saying a normal day without a ton of weirdness is the unexpected.

Groundhog Day--Not the movie ***UPDATE***
UPDATE What will did Phil see? According to the grand poobah of Phil-handlers, He did not see his shadow (No $h!# I couldn't see anything and I was driving), so we're having an early spring (maybe in PA)!
Yeah. Right. I'll hold my breath.
Yeah. Right. I'll hold my breath.
Snow makes me think of silence, of cold, muffled noises as we walk through the woods. The only things we hear are our boots or snowshoes crunching the snowy crust, the crack of a tree branch, the scurrying of an animal as it moves on its never ending forage for food.
Anything that quiet and insulating is bound to have some kind of folklore. Here are a few things I have found
Image by Aaron E. Silvers via FlickrMedieval Germans often relied on the shadow of a badger to tell them whether or not spring was on its way. If the badger saw his shadow on a particular day, then more winter was in store. If the badger didn't see his shadow, then spring would come soon. German immigrants brought this tradition to the United States. It is celebrated every February 2nd in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, as Groundhog Day.Phil has a website: http://www.groundhog.org/
The Old Woman of the Gloom was considered an evil spirit who gathered sticks on St. Briget's Day for a fire to dry herself. If St. Briget's Day was wet, the Old Woman could not venture out until she made sure there was a dry spring for her own comfort. If St. Briget's Day was dry, a wet spring would follow, so then she would gather enough fuel to warm her through the wet months. http://open-site.org/Science/Weather_and_Climate/Folklore
They have a bunch of videos
A tough Winter is ahead if:
corn husks are thick and tight...
apple skins are tough...
birds migrate early...
squirrels tails are very bushy...
berries and nuts are plentiful...
bees build their nests high in the trees. If the breast bone of the Thanksgiving goose is red or has many spots, expect a cold and stormy Winter; but if only a few spots are visible, expect a mild Winter.
The severity of Winter is determined by how far down the feathers have grown on a partridge's leg.
The wider the brown (middle) band on a woolly bear caterpillar, the milder the Winter.
The nearer the New Moon to Christmas Day, the harder the Winter.
If the first snowfall lands on unfrozen ground, the Winter will be mild.
If there is thunder in Winter, it will snow 7 days later.

Kwaidan - Yuki-Onna (Snow Woman)
The sad and haunting tale of Yuki Onna (雪女) consists of all the requisite elements of a truly classic traditional ghost story. The ferocity of the Yuki Onna who can be both horrific and deadly at will, also displays a deep compassion and sadness. In this way she is depicted not only as a mountain ghoul but as wholly feminine in her heartfelt contemplations.
Juxtaposed her near-divine status is the character of Minokichi, an innocent and naive young man who although possesses a good heart inevitably displays the moral and mental fraility of humans. Giddily failing to uphold a promise he swore to, Minokichi foolishly brings himself once again face to face with a terrifying Death.

The Snow QueenShe is all over the place - Hans Christian Andersen
The Snow Queen (Danish: Sneedronningen) is a fairy tale by author Hans Christian Andersen (1805–1875). The tale was first published in 1845, and centers on the struggle between good and evil as experienced by a little boy and girl, Kai and Gerda. The story is one of Andersen's longest and is considered by scholars, critics, and readers alike as one of his best. It is regularly included in selected tales and collections of his work as well as being frequently reprinted in illustrated storybook editions for children. The tale has been adapted in various media including animated film and television drama. The Snow Queen is a tale told in seven 'stories' (Danish: Historier):
- About the Mirror and its Pieces
- A Little Boy and a Little Girl
- The Flower Garden of the Woman Who Knew Magic
- The Prince and Princess
- The Lapp Woman and the Finn Woman

She shows up again In C.S. Lewis' The Lion, he Witch and the Wardrobe
The White Witch, as she is referred to by her Narnian subjects, is the land's self-proclaimed queen, tyrannizing all through her magic-imposed rule. Her spell on Narnia has made it "always winter but never Christmas" for a hundred years. When provoked, she turns opponents to stone by waving her wand.
The story begins in 1940 during World War II, when four children, Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy Pevensie, are evacuated from London to escape the Blitz. They are sent to live with Professor Digory Kirke, who lives in a country house in the English countryside.
While the four children are exploring the house, Lucy looks into a wardrobe and discovers a portal to a mysterious world called Narnia, in which she meets a faun named Tumnus who takes her to tea in his home. He confesses he planned to report her to the tyrannical White Witch but has thought better of it. Upon returning to our world, Lucy's siblings do not believe her story about Narnia. Her spiteful older brother Edmund enters the wardrobe and meets the White Witch, who befriends him and offers him magical Turkish delight that enchants him. She encourages him to bring his siblings to her in Narnia, with the promise that he shall rule over them. Edmund meets Lucy in Narnia and returns to England with her, but after returning to our world he denies to Susan and Peter that there is anything behind the wardrobe.
Eventually all four of the children enter Narnia together while hiding in the wardrobe. They meet Mr. and Mrs. Beaver, who invite them to dinner. The beavers recount a prophecy that the witch's power will fail when two Sons of Adam and two Daughters of Eve fill the four thrones at Cair Paravel. The beavers tell of the true king of Narnia — a great lion called Aslan — who has been absent for many years but is now "on the move again".
Edmund sneaks away to the White Witch. Her castle is filled with stone statues; enemies whom she petrified. The beavers realize where Edmund has gone and abandon their home, leading the children to join Aslan. As they travel, they notice that the snow is melting, indicating that the White Witch's spell is breaking. A visit by Father Christmas confirms this.
The children and the Beavers meet with Aslan and his army. Peter engages in his first battle, killing a wolf who threatens Susan.
The Witch approaches to speak with Aslan, insisting that according to "deep magic from the dawn of time" she has the right to execute Edmund as a traitor. Aslan speaks with her privately and persuades her to renounce her claim on Edmund's life. That evening, Aslan secretly leaves the camp, but is followed by Lucy and Susan. Aslan has bargained to exchange his own life for Edmund's. The Witch ties Aslan to the Stone Table and then kills him with a knife. The following morning Aslan is restored to life; for unbeknownst to the witch, "deeper magic from before the dawn of time" allows someone who willingly dies in the place of another to be returned to life.
Aslan allows Lucy and Susan to ride on his back as he travels to the Witch's castle, where he breathes upon the statues and restores them to life. Peter and Edmund lead the Narnian army in a battle against the White Witch's army, and Aslan arrives with the former statues as reinforcements. The Narnians rout the evil army, and Aslan kills the Witch.
The Pevensie children are named kings and queens of Narnia. On a hunt several years later, they rediscover the lamp post, walk through the wardrobe, and end up right back in the mansion just moments after they had entered the wardrobe. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lion,_the_Witch_and_the_Wardrobe
In current day the Snow Queen is the icy Queen of the Winter Court in Julie Kagawa's Iron Fey series. Like the storms we have been having she is a nasty piece of work freezing her enemies alive by filling, and encasing them in ice. She has no warmth even for her children.
I hope this has been enjoyable. I am possibly facing the snow queen myself as I may have to attend an event that is not yet canceled and which not attending could be more problematic than having a terrible accident.

Her deadly dreams leave her in grave danger
Since half-vampire Cat Crawfield and her undead lover Bones met six years ago, they've fought against the rogue undead, battled a vengeful Master vampire, and pledged their devotion with a blood bond. Now it's time for a vacation. But their hopes for a perfect Paris holiday are dashed when Cat awakes one night in terror. She's having visions of a vampire named Gregor who's more powerful than Bones and has ties to her past that even Cat herself didn't know about.
Gregor believes Cat is his and he won't stop until he has her. As the battle begins between the vamp who haunts her nightmares and the one who holds her heart, only Cat can break Gregor's hold over her. She'll need all the power she can summon in order to bring down the baddest bloodsucker she's ever faced . . . even if getting that power will result in an early grave.

I am all set for Jeaniene Frost's new and upcoming release, This Side of the Grave, Book Five in the Night Huntress series. I finished At Grave's End yesterday and Destined for an Early Grave today. This Side of the Grave releases on February 22 in e-book and Mass Market Paperback.
Danger waits on both sides of the grave.Half-vampire Cat Crawfield and her vampire husband Bones have fought for their lives, as well as for their relationship. But just when they've triumphed over the latest battle, Cat's new and unexpected abilities threaten to upset a long-standing balance . . .
With the mysterious disappearance of vampires, rumors abound that a species war is brewing. A zealot is inciting tensions between the vampires and ghouls, and if these two powerful groups clash, innocent mortals could become collateral damage. Now Cat and Bones are forced to seek help from a dangerous "ally"—the ghoul queen of New Orleans herself. But the price of her assistance may prove more treacherous than even the threat of a supernatural war . . . to say nothing of the repercussions Cat never imagined.
I finished all four, hardly able to sleep or any thing else. Good stories, nicely writt with a fine balance between funny and drama, love-making and thriller like suspense and action. Frost's real strength is in the characters she creates and details. And, more than the main characters get details. The stars are Cat, a half-human, half-Vampire hybrid, and Bones a master-vampire turn in the Australian penal colonies. ThaThe characters are written in a non cliché fashion. Cat, grows and changes in each novel but she is not your everyday PNR heroine. Bones is strong, but not infallible. Both can be asses in and outside of their relationship, do and say the absolute wrong thing, but when push comes to shove they have a very loving relationship that weathers B.I.G. storms in each book. I think the relationship reminds me a bit of Jamie and Clare Fraser's in the Outlander Series by Diana Gabaldon. It is a compelling relatiionship.
Tackling near death on both sides, and then going on, At Grave's End had me in tears several times. While Destined for an Early Grave made me angry at both characters for what appears to be severe pig headedness.
I just keep hoping Cat's sweet mum Justina steps on a landmine. What a bee-yotch. But Frost even gives this nasty piece of work the ability to grow and change.
One thing I have noticed is that all vampires worthy of ink have lots of money. Where are the poor vampires?
The other thing about Bones is that compared to many vampires in other series, he is not nearly as disparaging of humans as they are, or even as much as others in this series. This tolerance allows Cat time to reconcile with her vampire half. Half is a way of describing her DNA but the Vampire is stronger than her human side. As she realizes this through out these two book, this psychological exploration is instrumental in moving the story forward.
Frost doesn't skimp on description but nor does she waste it.
I highly recommend the series but the books will stand on their own. They won't have to stand alone because there is noway to stop at one. I haven't found a series this compelling since I read Chloe Neill's Chicagoland Vampire series.
Here is a funny quote from Destined for an Early Grave:
Cat and Bones are in Paris with Bones Co-leader and Grandsire, Mencheres, an ancient Egyptian:I started laughing as I read this phrase and had to read it to my husband. I had to share it with you as well.
"Then you remember the dream," Mencheres stated. "That bodes ill."
The fear of that made my reply snappy. "Hey, Walks Like An Egyptian, how about for once you drop the formal stuff and talk like you live in the twenty-first century."
"The shit's gonna splatter, start buggin' , yo," Mencheres responded instantly. (Kindle Ed. loc. 653)

Always different, always dynamic, Rachel Morgan’s story created and told by Kim Harrison always gives me ethe feeling that I am traveling along with her. Who, other than a group of ridiculous witches afraid of the truth, wouldn’t love Rachel? She is thoughtful, honest, self-sacrificing, the paranormal Jack Bauer without most of his violent tendencies.
As we ride through the American West with Rachel, I could feel how grimy I would be in an old boat of a Buick with a varying number of passengers, several of whom she isn’t at all sure she can, or should, trust.
Rachel’s loyalty to her partners and to those to whom she has given her word is without flaw. Her disgust when Trent acts without scruples is only balanced by that sense of honor and their intense attraction to each other.
Her time in the ever-after is also changing as she comes to grips with who she is, and her self-acceptance is the harbinger of the witches council beginning to accept their origins in demonkind. Rachel brings up the idea that it doesn’t matter where the power originated but how it is used and the intention behind it.
Kim Harrison, as always builds a tight world with excellent continuity and adherence to the “rules” which define it. I missed her neighbor and the pregnant elf Ceri in this one but I am certain they’ll show up again. While Rachel has enjoyed intimacy in several of the books in The Hollows, Kim Harrison proves you can have a successful adult paranormal series based in plot and character and not slap and tickle. The intimacy in Kim’s novels serves the plot, but they aren’t the plot.
If you haven’t read any of this series, you want to get started as soon as possible and then read Pale Demon as soon as it is out on the shelves February 22. The Rachel Morgan series is fast becoming a favorite with fans of Urban Fantasy and deservedly so. Get reading!
