The four novels in M.L.N. Hanover's The Black Sun's Daughter series arrived at my house late last year as mysteriously as the main character's inheritance arrives on her doorstep. I don't think I won them and I had not asked for them. but I didn't look the gift horse in its mouth!
I started to read the first book, Unclean Spirits and loved it. I got in touch with the rep at Pocket/Simon and Schuster and asked if they would send a copy of each to a winner. I already knew that I liked the books enough to want to keep them. And, thanks to the publisher I was able to offer a giveaway event over four weeks! Book Two is DARKER ANGELS, VICIOUS GRACE is third and KILLING RITES is the fourth.
These are very well written and exciting books which take place over about two years. A snarky young woman, Jayné is estranged from her family, has dropped out of school, broken up with her boyfriend and was dumped by her friends. She is on the fast track to loser-land when a lawyer from Denver contacts her and tells her that her Uncle died and left his estate to her. She figures there might be enough to get her through a rough patch but it is a big surprise to find out he was loaded. Really loaded. He also seems to have lead a mysterious, double life chasing demons. They are chasing back and therein, as they say, lies the tale. She meets four of her Uncle's friends. Three are nice and one is a walking skeleton.
In each book, Jayné learns more about her Uncle's legacy. She also learns about herself and grows up a lot. She is someone I could strongly identify with. She is decent, but flawed. But she is still a heroine with great instincts.
Wow, The person who had the most entries was also the winner and also won another contest here recently! That is so weirdly coincidental. How do I come up with a winner? Well, I import all the forms, add the extra entries in and then I had random.org assign each entry a random number in sequence from one to eighty-four. Then I go to random.org and have them generate a random number. This time it was 60.

I never think the number of entries a person makes is a really big generator of wins but in this case it seems it was the right move for Mary.
