THIS IS A MUST READ!
A Buzz Thrill post is about a book I am excited about,  that is coming out a couple of months from now. Look for a more in depth review later!
There are a few series I follow avidly—you know the series that you actually have to have the first day out—if not earlier.

screen lift www.staciakane.net
I am so lucky to be a blogging reviewer and on NetGalley because both of this series big, new releases were available for reviewers. I think my heart skipped a beat when I found them. I actually forced myself to wait to read CHASING MAGIC, until I couldn't wait any longer.

Well, the drawback is that I have to wait longer for the next installment.

I have to tell you that CHASING MAGIC is not going to disappoint.  It's a page turner and you will hold your breath waiting for something truly horrible to happen to Chess, Terrible or Lex.

What can I tell you without spoiling the suspense? It has the usual characters, a wedding, and at least one walnut.

The writing grabs me right off the bat. The street language, Downspeak, Stacia's own inventive cross between American contemporary slang and a sort of rusticated, Cockney-Like syntax makes me pay attention. Once in a while Chess' internal monologue of self-hatred is repetitive, but then it would be so in an abuse survivor addict.

The series has one huge reader pulling paradox in that it denies religion but magic is Fact and Fact is Truth.  That irony fascinates me. But it is my love of Caesaria Putnam, "Chess" that  gets me each time.

I highly recommend that you read the entire series and pre-order CHASING MAGIC. It's not out until June 26, in the US and August in the UK so you have time to catch up!

Here's the Chatter on it.
A DEADLY HIGH

Magic-wielding Churchwitch and secret addict Chess Putnam knows better than anyone just how high a price people are willing to pay for a chemical rush. But when someone with money to burn and a penchant for black magic starts tampering with Downside’s drug supply, Chess realizes that the unlucky customers are paying with their souls—and taking the innocent with them, as the magic-infused speed compels them to kill in the most gruesome ways possible.

As if the streets weren’t scary enough, the looming war between the two men in her life explodes, taking even more casualties and putting Chess squarely in the middle. Downside could become a literal ghost town if Chess doesn’t find a way to stop both the war and the dark wave of death-magic, and the only way to do that is to use both her addiction and her power to enter the spell and chase the magic all the way back to its malevolent source. Too bad that doing so will probably kill Chess—if the war doesn’t first destroy the man who’s become her reason for living. www.staciakane.net

Fabulous Author Interview

www.jennbennett.net
SUMMONING THE NIGHT
Arcadia Bell Series #2
Jenn Bennett
Pocket Star a Simon and Schuster imprint
April 24, 2012
eBook & mass-market paperback: 336 pages

Today, we're visiting with Jenn Bennett, a newish author with her second book out! Jenn is also giving away a signed paperbac. Please enter beneath the interview. Following and other tasks are not required but will get you more entries.

Description:
MAGICAL TRICKS. DEMONIC TREATS.
After narrowly escaping her fate as a sacrificial scapegoat, Arcadia (Cady) Bell is back to normal. Or at least as ordinary as life can be for a renegade magician and owner of a tiki bar that caters to Earthbound demons. She’s gearing up for the busiest day of the year—Halloween—when a vengeful kidnapper paralyzes the community. The influential head of the local Hellfire Club taps Cady to track down the fiendish bogeyman, and now that she’s dating red-hot Lon Butler, the club’s wayward son, she can hardly say no.
Cady and Lon untangle a gruesome thirty-year trail of clues that points to danger for the club members’ children. But locating the person behind the terror will require some metaphysical help from Cady’s loyal bar patrons as well as her potent new Moonchild powers—and she’d better figure it out before the final victim disappears and her own darkest secret becomes her biggest enemy. www.jennbennett.net
Let's get my thoughts out of the way:

I loved the book. I kept clicking next page late into the night because I wanted to know what happens next. The tone and quality are consistent and the characters and the world are developing nicely. The plot, as we discuss in a bit, is very contemporary and salient. The book is well edited which I think is soooo important in a e-publishing world. I Highly Recommend the book and the series; I believe it's a great new series for Urban Fantasy/Paranormal Romance readers. I really like Kim Harrison and I think it would be a great series for any one who enjoys the Hollows/Rachel Morgan books. While it could stand alone, I believe it is better in a serial context and since it is only book 2, it's easy to catch-up!

Please Welcome Jenn Bennett (cheers, applause)
This is a great Interview, not because I wrote the questions but because Jenn writes clear, direct and funny answers!

Hi Jenn, Thanks for taking time to answer my questions about the SUMMONING THE NIGHT and the Arcadia Bell series. And, thanks to you and your publisher, Pocket Star for the giveaway!

First, this is the second in the series, which started with your debut novel Kindling the Moon. The protagonist is Arcadia Bell, a human magician. To many, a magician is a guy you hire for kids’ parties but Cady wields real firepower. In your arcana of supernatural beings what is a magician? Are there non-human witches? Can anyone be a magician with the right training?

Hi Stephanie! Thanks so much for having me on your blog!
Regarding the word “magician” in my series, it refers to someone with magical ability: a witch, mage, sorcerer. My heroine, Cady, was raised in a community of ceremonial magicians, who are humans with magical talent. Any human can learn magic, but those who are most successful have a lot of natural Heka, or magical energy that fuels spell-work. Are there non-human witches? Well, Cady is surprised to discover that Lon, an Earthbound demon, can do magic. And readers will be learning more about Cady’s origins in books 3 & 4, which will delve a little deeper into this subject.

I say “debut,” had you published before?

I had only been writing for six months when I wrote KINDLING THE MOON. About six months after that, I had a literary agent and New York publishers were bidding on it. Right now, I’m contracted for five Arcadia releases, with the option for my publisher to extend the series if it’s successful. I feel rather lucky and humbled by how quickly everything happened for me, as I know it’s not the norm when it comes to getting published.

Do you believe in magic and such?

I’ve always been interested in the occult, world myth, esoterica. And I’ve witnessed a lot of unexplainable things that defied logic and reason. And I’ve seen a lot of bunk, too. So I suppose I believe that anything’s possible, but critical thought shouldn’t be abandoned.

Cady talks about her “esoteric” organization, Eklesia Eleusia or E∴ E∴ -- since this is the second in the series, what is that and how are these groups organized like churches? Is it a national organization in Arcadia’s world?

These are magical organizations that exist in Cady’s world. Membership is usually limited. Some only have a few hundred members. Others have thousands. They are generally secretive and exclusive, and the members have devoted themselves to learning and practicing magick. As you mention, Cady grew up in one of these orders. It was originally based in France, but moved its main temple to Florida years ago. There are a couple dozen other smaller temples scattered around the world.

Lon is an Earthbound demon? What is that in relation to any other type and what other types are there?

In my world, Earthbounds are humans with demon souls. They look human, have various minor paranormal abilities, and are descended from big, bad scaly demons that exist on another plane called the Æythr. Most humans can’t identify Earthbounds: to them, they are just their neighbors or coworkers. But Cady is different. She has supernatural sight and can see a marker of light on Earthbounds that other magicians/humans can’t see.

Please tell me about Arcadia: Other than making love with Lon, working in her bar, and having a pet hedgehog, what does she like to do in her spare time?

Lon keeps her busy (ha!), however, she also spends a lot of time doing magical favors for her friends and neighbors, banishing pesky imps, that sort of thing.

We know that Lon and Jupe like classic thriller flicks; what is Arcadia’s favorite film genre and what’s her favorite movie?

Cady probably likes Raiders of the Lost Ark. I think that’s where her older-man fetish started, but she likely doesn’t realize it.

Please tell us a bit about how she grew up—we know her parents allegedly conceived her in a play to obtain more power killing several people in the attempt. She believes they are dead in the other world/plane. But other than the interesting spiritual practices what was her childhood like?

Strange as it may sound, Cady’s parents were vegetarians, very strict, and focused on her education. She wasn’t allowed to date or have a lot of fun. I think her childhood could be described as lonely.

And, speaking of her crazy parents. She thinks they are dead, but I notice there is some wiggle room written in. Will we be meeting them again?

Mmm, you noticed that, did you? I think this subject—whether they are alive or dead—will pop back up in book 3 and 4.

A couple of times you mention Lon being much older than she is but not as old as the head of the Hellfire club; do demons age more slowly than humans? What is the life span and will Arcadia stay young because of her weird magick?

Lon is 42. Cady is 25. He’s not going through a midlife crisis, and she’s not a gold-digger. They are just two people who happened to fall in love, despite their age difference. (Gasp! Shock! Horror!) Earthbounds aren’t immortal in my world. Their ancestors, Æthyric demons, live longer lives. Because of this, Earthbounds tend to stay healthier longer, and live slightly longer than the average human, but only be a few years. A decade, at most.

This story deals with missing children, is it a result of the tragedy you see so much on the news about missing kids?

I was wary, writing SUMMONING THE NIGHT about missing teens. It’s a sensitive subject, and I didn’t want to exploit it, which is why I tried to focus the story on the hunt for the villain, and not the tragedy. But sure, I think a lot of my plot ideas are inspired by news stories, and this is no exception.

Sex between Lon and Cady is a little more adventurous in this story than the first. Is that something you’re working on in writing the stories?

For those who haven’t read this series, I’d categorize it as an urban fantasy/paranormal romance hybrid. But I’d like to think that it’s not the usual alpha-male, hyper-romanced kind of paranormal. I try to create real characters with insecurities and flaws. My writing is very character- and voice-driven. Regarding Cady and Lon, as this series progresses, their sex will likely reflect what’s going on in their relationship. In SUMMONING THE NIGHT, they are becoming more comfortable around each other. Not quite at the I-love-you stage, but they aren’t wooing each other, either. However, books 3 and 4 are progressively darker in tone, and some major things are revealed about Cady’s origins. So I think it’ll be very, very interesting to see that conflict manifest their physical relationship. And I hope readers will feel the same way.

FREE TASTE: A DARK KISS OF RAPTURE

A DARK KISS OF RAPTURE
Sylvia Day
October 6, 2011File Size: 234 KB
Print Length: 66 pages
Sold by: Amazon Digital Services
Free E-Read
A DARK KISS OF RAPTURE is a stand-alone prequel to THE RENEGADE ANGELS series. You don't need to read it to enjoy the full-length books.

Of all the Fallen, Raze’s hungers are some of the darkest and most insatiable. His brazen seductions cost him his wings, leaving him soulless and immortal, the most dangerous of seducers. He has roamed the earth for eons, hunting the rogues of his kind and protecting the humans who provide him with blood and sex. He is content with his life and the transient pleasures that flow through it... until one night and one woman change everything.
Kimberly McAdams is smart, beautiful, and wealthy. She can have any man she wants, but the moment she sets eyes on the lethally stunning Raze she knows he’s the man she needs. As one searingly erotic night burns into something deeper and far more vital than either of them expected, an adversary from Raze’s past sees a chance for revenge. Twisted by hatred, she will take from Raze what was taken from her—the precious gift of love.

THE RENEGADE ANGELS  trilogy is a dark and sexy paranormal romance series that debuted in October 2011. The trilogy chronicles the power struggles among angels, lycans, and vampires as they vie for supremacy. The first book, A TOUCH OF CRIMSON, tells the story of Adrian, leader of the angels. The second book, A HUNGER SO WILD, tells the story of Elijah, leader of the lycans. The third book, A TASTE OF SEDUCTION, tells the story of Syre, leader of the vampires.

This was free on Kindle and after reading BARED TO YOU I wanted to read another tale by Sylvia Day to see more of her writing style. I really enjoyed the love story part of the book, and I also enjoyed the world Sylvia was building after a bit. At first I was confused by the new names and relationships.

This is a quick novella, so unless there is going to be a paranormal destiny reason later in the series, I did feel the mutual attraction to emotional attachment was a bit sudden or ungrounded. But within a short story Sylvia did manage to get a lot of character development in, and relayed the world-rules information skillfully. There's also a fair bit of suspense.
If you want to read some of Sylvia's work this is a good starter at a great price and as a prequel should be a great intro to the series. I like these freebies because they give you that idea of whether you're going to enjoy the writer's work and I can tell you about this freebie. After all, the book might be free but your time probably is at a premium.  The intimate scenes in BARED TO YOU are more graphic than in DARK KISS OF RAPTURE but it is still steamy.

Do you like these KINDLE freebies? If you don't have an e-reader do they just tick you off?

This one is currently free:

BIG GAME Kiss and Kill

BIG GAME
VV Inn #3
File Size: 494 KB
Publisher: Red Hot Publishing; 1 edition (April 21, 2012)
Sold by: Amazon Digital Services
Disclosure: E-Galley sent by author.  No remuneration exchanged and all opinions are my own, except as otherwise noted.

In this much-anticipated third installment of the V V Inn series, our sexy couple journeys to Argentina, bringing half their seethe along for the ride.

Vivian and Rafe venture into the Seat of Darkness, the Tribunal's base, to uncover who's plotting against them and why. From a cold, windy island off the southern Argentine coast, to the decadence of Buenos Aires, the group has plenty to keep their attention--seductive twins, deadly games, and a bunch of bloodsucking fiends who hate our much-loved, despotic innkeeper enough to see her dead. Asa and Jon stay in Alaska, to manage the famous inn as it opens doors to a new type of guest. Visiting werewolves go on their first exploration of the property, looking for big game--hormones run high and shots ring out across the tundra. Soon, the hunters become the hunted and the peaceful getaway resembles a battleground.

How many will survive the next five days and will they ever be the same again?  Via C. J Ellison

With lively and descriptive voices, C.J. gives rein to the characters in her books in this active and most dangerous installment in the story of an ancient vampire and her human husband.

Having the potential for immortality only means you haven't been killed yet and it doesn't mean people won't try. Plus, what looks like a conspiracy may be a series of coincidences or vice-versa.

I began reading C. J.'s books when I won them in a giveaway. But I kept reading because I want to know what happens. And, this one had me worried. C. J. is definitely working the suspense and her writing is sharpening with each book.

Her stories are sensual and descriptive.  I asked if she observant the way her characters are and she said  she is, and can't turn it off. The imagery can be lush and almost poetic or fanciful and symbolic. A lot of what happens is internal monologue. And each chapter is written from a different main character's point of view in a not-so-strict rotation. That was at first confusing, but becomes less so, and C. J. has really been getting the knack of each character's voice.

The sex is great―raw, graphic and at the same time very emotional. You know that neither Rafe or Dria will share and that's why they kept Jon in Alaska. He needs to find a girl who isn't Dria who he is attached to because of their blood link. The folks in her novels are a randy lot, and violent, but  it's almost a given in the genre that supernaturals are pretty sexual and violent creatures (even sparkly ones). C.J.'s are no exception although they aren't just cookie cutters or "types" either. Actually her chracters are all distinct and interestingly diverse from the types we often see. I can't help it but in my mind I see Vivian/Dria's husband Rafe as a U Boat commander type. But he is so much more.

There are a couple of OMG! moments when things happen or are perceived to have happened that are shocking and a couple of plotted red herrings.  This may be the first time we think that Dria could be less than prepared or has underestimated her opponents.

But there are more of these tales in the offing. Definitely part of a series and best read in order, but not expensive or long that it will require a loan or a taking a vacation.

Fate Lends a Hand to HEARTS IN DARKNESS

HEARTS IN DARKNESS
by Laura Kaye
Wild Rose Press

Kindle: 218 KB, (April 20, 2011)
Paperback: 110 pages (August 9, 2011)

Makenna James thinks her day can’t get any worse, until she finds herself stuck in a pitch-black elevator with a complete stranger. Distracted by a phone call and juggling too much stuff, the pin-striped accountant caught only a glimpse of a dragon tattoo on his hand before the lights went out.

Caden Grayson is amused when a redhead literally falls at his feet. His amusement turns to panic when the power fails. Despite his piercings, tats, and vicious scar, he’s terrified of the dark and confined spaces. Now, he’s trapped in his own worst nightmare.

To fight fear, they must both reach out and open up. With no preconceived notions based on looks to hold them back, they discover just how much they have in common. In the warming darkness, attraction grows and sparks fly, but will they feel the same when the lights come back on?
HEARTS IN DARKNESS is the 2012 EPIC eBook Award Winner for Best Novella of 2012!
www.laurakayeauthor.com

This is the hottest story I have ever read. I could describe the effect it had on me but I would blush if I ever met you in person. Enough Said!

It's hot because the physical affection combines with a strong emotional attraction. Laura can even take a scene where the couple stays mostly clothed and turn it into a scorcher.  But, there's mutual respect as well. No one is debased, even titillatingly. That's especially important in short erotica which can easily become  a sea of terms for body parts that make me cringe a little.

When fate steps in and brings two  unlikely people together that is magic, so while this is out-of-genre it really is as supernatural as vampires and shifters. And that is exactly what happens in this story where two people for whom a meeting may never have occurred, are brought together by something as small as a short circuit.

And, in the 110 pages you actually get a plot, and character development. The characters are pretty complicated as well, with history and surprises awaiting.

This is a HIGHLY RECOMMENDED romantic piece; and if you are a fan of short erotica it is an ABSOLUTE MUST READ!  I predict elevators stopping in cities everywhere in the near future. Oops!

My only complaint is that it was TOO SHORT and I WANT MORE McKenna and Caden!

Revelation is the Second Book in the De laVega Cats series

After I raved about Lauren's mastery of erotic writing in BENEATH THE SKIN, the third book in this series, my husband read the book.  That's good advice for men: Read what your wife or partner thinks is hot. Then discuss—sometimes a fantasy needs to stay a fantasy, and other things, well they are negotiable....

LAURENDANE.com
REVELATION
de La Vega Cats,
Book 2
by Lauren Dane
Trade Paperback (227 pages) July 5, 2011
& Ebook (Kindle Ed. 812 KB July 20, 2010 Amazon link below)
Disclosure: Blogger Purchase

I wanted to read more about these very hot cats.
I discovered I had read book one, TRINITY a while ago, so I downloaded REVELATION and read it yesterday.
It didn't disappoint, but, it is always a bit weird to backtrack on a story. I feel like I was missing some history in between so I may go back yet again.

From Lauren's Website, here is the description:
He has the one thing she never thought she deserved. A place to belong…
At long last, Kendra Kellogg has found her sister—but she’s no closer to filling the gaps in her past. The magick that brought them together makes them targets for dark mages intent on finishing what started with their mother’s murder.
As if her life wasn’t chaotic enough, in barrels the one thing she doesn’t expect, Max de La Vega. He’s six-and-a-half-feet of cocoa-brown alpha male. He’s strong, intelligent, sexy and intense. Everything she’d wanted in a man. And he scares the hell out of her. Still healing from a disastrous past relationship, she wonders if she’ll ever have that kind of forever.
The next in line to run his jaguar jamboree, Max is unused to hearing “no”. Once he knows what he wants, he assumes he’ll get it. And he wants Kendra. She deserves happiness and it’s his mission to give it to her.
When dark mages attempt to steal her magickal energy, Max’s cat agrees with the man—Kendra is his to protect and he will stop at nothing to keep her safe. She can push him away as hard as she likes, he’s not going anywhere.
The story gives off a lot of erotic, steamy heat. It happens in Boston—not a place known for the kind of erotic heat generated by Lauren's characters; heat that would make road salt unnecessary in the winter. I like that it happens in Boston, because it's not far from me and I like to feel familiar with what I am reading sometimes. It's also fun to think of all these naughty things happening in a place I see as all starchy and buttoned.

In both stories, I am impressed by the ability for both parties to say what they want in sex and, usually, in their relationships. Kendra is very good at that, and is sexually open and daring in ways that I think shock Max. That's about not assuming you know who someone is by what they do. Kendra is a schoolteacher with a piercing in a very unusual location something else we don't expect.

It is also a story with some heartbreak—betrayal in a family.  Not like,  Mom, she stole my sweater! More like, Mom, he is trying to kill me! In a pack of shifters this underhanded plotting and treason is the worst. Challenge would be forgivable, what happens here—nope.

So, yeah, it is super steamy romance and paranormal , but there are deeper issues touched on. The kind of relationship that develops between Max and Kendra is between two people and family where betrayal will never be an issue.

Yeah, hot sex is nice to read but it is nice to read erotic fiction with well-developed characters, structure, story and themes, too.

UNDER A VAMPIRE MOON OUT TODAY & WHAT'S NEXT for THE ARGENEAUS?!?!?!

Yes, I did just review this book last week (UNDER A VAMPIRE MOON takes us on a tropical vacation).  But I liked it so much that I felt the need to remind you all that it is out  today. And, Under a Vampire Moon is available at AMAZON.

When Vampires Go On Vacation. . .

Escaping a horrible marriage, Carolyn Connor has no desire to think about men—a vow she's determined to keep while on vacation in St. Lucia. She'll take the Caribbean sun and sea and plenty of tropical drinks with those cute umbrellas poolside, thank you. She absolutely does not need male company, no matter how tan and rock-hard his body may be.

Easy enough, but then Carolyn meets the charming Marguerite Argeneau, who is infamous among her family for her matchmaking prowess . . .

Christian Notte has well known the power of finding a life mate. He's seen enough of his Argeneau relatives taken down for the count, but he never imagined he'd let himself fall in love—until he meets the enthralling, charmingly skittish, and oh-so-mortal Carolyn. But how will he reveal what he is and still convince this once-bitten mortal to trust him with her heart . . . and her forever?

Don't hate me but, One of the best things about the E-Galley, and so, I am assuming the Kindle version at least, was a first chapter excerpt of the next book in the series, THE LADY IS A VAMP, out at the end of July. "Ugh, too long until the end of July!" I thought after finishing the excerpt! How can I possibly wait?! It's not like I don't have a hundred books to read, but I enjoy this series so much that I could go for an Argeneau every month!

Then, to my surprise the e-galley of THE LADY IS A VAMP was made available to reviewers by AVON/HARPER COLLINS!!! I immediately downloaded the short novel (214 pages).  I made  it just one day before giving in to my urge, nay, need, to devour this new piece the was an Argeneau polishes off a bag of blood (blushing, I look ashamed by my lack of control, but satisfied)!

Of course, I plan to review it closer to publication but here's what I can tell you: The story is about Jeanne Louise Argeneau, Marguerite's neice and Nicholas' daughter.  THE LADY IS A VAMP is completely different than any other Argeneau novel or story up to this point. It is still sexy, Nanos and Marguerite still have a hand in the plot and it is poignant. Also, it involves the finer points of Immortal Law and does not take place in the tropics.

Hmm, what else can I say?  I couldn't put it down and demolished it in about two and a half hours. I hope this series continues a long time.

LIQUID SILVER BOOKS

Great story-idea and very complex world with a lot of back-story causing the occasionally slick info dump although I was still left wanting.  Written in the first person with a conversational tone but in real time and without much description. I felt the writer rushed the story and even the sex, although it wasn't vanilla. The sex was varied and interesting, but the end result felt like a set-up for the main character. The intricacies of the plot were occasionally confusing, and I felt too much was left out. I felt like I was filling in too many blanks in a language I did not know especially in vampire politics, types of vampires and character background.

Very much in the personality of the main character who was a bit of a drifter turned bloodslave without much in the way of self-will or ambition. Lacking insight into the other characters who all blend a little bit into bad vampire, good vampire, werewolf, other, human.  It was a solid "Meh."

Quick story, very active.

The Afterlife Club Has A Lot Of Spunk But Made Me Cry

THE AFTERLIFE CLUB
Jude Ryan
e-book
Kindle: 429 KB Print Length: 196 pages

Kindle Freebie in Jan. 2012

When twenty-five-year-old Madeleine Duffy wakes up after a terrifying cycling accident to hear she's the newest member of the Afterlife Club, Cyclists' Chapter, she's thinks it's a place more horrifying than hell itself. After all, the only reason she even hauled her bulk onto that torture machine every morning was the chance to see London's hottest cyclist (aka Corduroy Man) go by each day -- and maybe lose a few pounds in the process. Things get even worse when Madeleine discovers she's expected to get back on the bike to help protect the living from traffic doom. How can a woman whose life revolved around shopping and croissants be expected to change in death? But when Madeleine's own reluctance to let go results in disastrous consequences, she must decide: is she strong enough to fulfill the new role she's been given, or should she cling to the empty life she no longer lives? And now that she's dead, how in heaven's name is she ever going to attract Corduroy Man?
The Afterlife Club Page at Amazon.com

With a deep concept uncharacteristic to the genre and voice, this story is a slow moving STEAMBATH (1973 TV adaptation of Bruce Jay Friedman's off-Broadway play) meets IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE meets a piece of light chick lit. While it was occasionally moving, I felt no good reason to care for Madeleine, she is selfish and stuck in a rather uncomfortable comfort zone. I felt sorry for the one's left behind and the Corduroy Jacket man she longs to meet. But, in death she learns the meaning of life.  The ending was almost a non sequitur―abrupt and unexplained. The first two-thirds of the book is slow; I imagined myself dying before anything significant happens.  About then, the foreshadowed and expected meeting of the story arcs happens.

There are a lot, A LOT of typos, characters'  names changing, misspellings etc. It is listed as having a publisher who I am unable to locate,  but it is inexcusable that this many errors made it to the reader's page, especially now that is priced and not free.

The British chick-lit voice and characters are pleasant enough, the characters are even well-developed, but the pace and the errata took away, and the concept, life/death/existential crisis was deeper than the story. If it were a bit less fluffy, the concept might meet the story but as it stands it feels off-balance.

And, I can't believe I remembered a TV movie from 1973, including the actress who was in it.

Lynsay Sands, the nationally bestselling author of the Argeneau/Rogue Hunter vampire series, is one of the superstars of paranormal romance. Her latest Argeneau novel, Under a Vampire Moon, features a recently single, romantically-wary mortal who encounters a gorgeous vampire male waiting for her on a pristine Caribbean beach. Under a Vampire Moon is a treat for fans of Charlaine Harris and her Sookie Stackhouse novels—for anyone, in fact, who appreciates a good island romance between a hot blooded human and a love-hungry immortal.

Book Description:
When Vampires Go On Vacation . .
(Harper Collins)

The entirety of UNDER A VAMPIRE MOON takes place on St. Lucia. Even if I didn't adore Lynsay Sands, which I do, and didn't love this book in particular, which I did, I would still think that UNDER A VAMPIRE MOON  is good for Saint Lucia. Seriously, Anse Chastanet and Jade Mountain aren't mentioned by name but I've taken the liberty of extrapolating and put the island and these resorts at the top of my list for our thirtieth wedding anniversary in January. What a gorgeous place! Really, Lynsay could be a travel writer!

Besides the lush tropical setting, a first for the Argeneau Vampire series, I am always impressed by Lynsay's  ability to take the underlying story pattern for the series and make it something fresh and new with each book. Among the many who make the attempt at formula series writing, there are few writers who I find do this effectively, Lynsay and Lara Adrian are two of my favorites. I gobble these books up as soon as possible. While there is an underlying structure they build each book from the ground up with new plots, additional well-defined [for this story, smart and mostly fun] characters and awesome locations. It's like getting a present from a favorite chocolatier—you know whatever in the box is going to be good even if the bon-bon mix is different.
Lynsay takes us to this exotic locale and describes it in perfect detail, you can practically hear the waves on the beach. She adds the familiar Marguerite Argeneau with her uncanny knack for finding her relatives special life mates, and her new-old husband. And then she brings in some cousins and her long lost, recently rediscovered, son into the mix.

The way to romance here is very different and sensitively skirts the edges of a tricky issue; being in the closet. If she was less deft, this could be disastrous. But she is adept at carrying it off.

There's a great twist with only a very slight foreshadowing.  The denial that a mate has been found is less in this story than previous stories.  Maybe Marguerite's family has finally suggested her uncanny abilities. There's a new angle here.

One reason I like Lynsay's series so much is that she has the most sensible reasoning behind vampiric immortality I've read. And, I read about vampires a lot. It makes the suspension of disbelief easier for me because I think her theory is mostly plausible and she has really had good continuity throughout the series. She has not, as far as I can recall, used a last minute loophole to get around a disaster in any of the 16 books in the series. I don't always need "sensible" but once in a while it's nice.

And, I also love the way the youthful physical nature of characters contrasts with the calendar age of the characters. For example, Marguerite looks the same age as her son but there's no disguise for her maternal nature and the wisdom of seven centuries.  Leads disparity leads to all kinds of interesting quirks in conversation and behavior.

Now, look, I'm not saying it's Shakespeare. I prefer Lynsay to Janet Evanovich I think her story telling skills and writing are much better. It is book-candy, but it's balm for the mind and soul. And, book-candy hasn't any calories!
For Paranormal Romance Aficionados this is an absolute MUST READ!
Where would you go for the most romantic vacation? Any suggestions?

It's really strange to find a lot of fault with a book when I see gushing reviews all over. And, it certainly makes me examine my opinion.  But, while I can almost always find something positive to say about every book, I do believe my responsibility is to you, the reader, when I review a book or film.

From misspellings to typos that changed the probable meaning of a sentence, to the use of terms that are out of the time period or otherwise inappropriate, the editing was practically non-existent.  For example, "For many years, she'd heard stories of Drogan and the escapes he and Gerard had done."  (Kindle location 1256) "Done!?" While I suppose this is not an entirely wrong way to describe escaping it is certainly not in popular usage.  Until I read the authors bio and credits I wondered if English was her first language.

Then the author often uses period speech to set a tone, but also uses contemporary terminology. For example she  uses the word "anxiety" when the heroine is telling the hero she feels his uneasiness and worry. But we're in Norman England about 1127 and the word did not exist then. I'll admit, maybe that's a bit nit picky, but there are several such examples. Another is the use of aloe which was not cultivated in England until the 16th century (Wikipedia). This is somewhat important to the historical context of the book.  There's an off chance that someone brought a plant back from the crusades but it's pretty slim. And, the word "hello" which didn't come into common use until the19th century.  And a final example is the use of the word "brethren" to refer to a group consisting solely of women.  There were other obvious typos and such.

These are a few of the items I noted, and while alone don't make the work unpleasant, their cumulative effect is a degradation in quality and impact.  Taken singly, it is nit-picking, taken together the errors  do matter. Editing can make or break a book as far as I am concerned.

Grant's heroine, Serena, suffers from an over sensitivity to touch, the sun and temperature. But, the nature is not medical because when the hero touches her she doesn't bruise. That's a good thing later in the story or she'd have a lot of bruises in certain places. But, the condition is not ascribed to the curse that prevents witches from taking husbands, nor was it stated that two other witches we are introduced to are as friable.

Another strange thing: when Drogan and Serena are camped in the forest she is visited by her owl, Nicodemus, but then we don't hear of him again, except a possible sighting near the end of the tale.

I feel there was too much distance in the narrative; the writer tells us what the characters are feeling and thinking. It' maybe shorthand that makes for a non-demanding story—where the reader is satisfied with what the writer says the characters are experiencing.

So, it wasn't all bad. There is a solid series start here with a good story of sweeping events mundane and magical. The characters are the standard fare except, maybe, Serena and some of Drogan's servants. And the villain is a bit different, as villains are apt to be.

The intimate scenes were nicely done and staged. The lovers are certainly randy once they get around to it! And, I wanted them to get together so it was nice when they did.

I can't honestly recommend it to you as a good read. There are just too many little things that turned me off.

Do you find the cumulative effect of issues like this to damage your enjoyment of a book, or are you able to over look them?

And we all answer a question. This week:

Q: Fight! Fight! If you could have two fictional characters battle it out (preferably from books), who would they be and who do you think would win?

A:  I don't know why they would be fighting but I would like to see Rachel Morgan and Anita Blake fight. Anita is so prickly and Rachel is tough but not bitchy. Sadly, I think Anita would pull out her enormous arsenal of weapons and Rachel would capitulate.  Now, I think Sabina Kane from the Red-Headed Stepchild series by Jaye Wells could take on Anita. She's also an assassin and most days she is as prickly as Anita.
