WHO WOULD YOU CHOOSE FOR YOUR VALENTINE?

Personals Ads from Penton: Single Irish Vampire seeks…

Left to right: Will, Aiden and Mirren

It’s February, so everyone’s mind is on romance these days. Even a vampire fighting a war to save his way of life has to take a break for love, after all. And while the heroes and heroines of the Penton Legacy series (Redemption, Absolution, and the newest addition, Omega) might seem to be matches not quite made in heaven, here’s how their personals ads might look. Which hero would you match with which heroine?

Hero #1

Widowed male Irish vampire seeks soul mate. Age: 400-plus. Six feet tall, shoulder-length chestnut hair, blue eyes. Enjoys gardening, ancient Celtic music, reading, and Irish whiskey. Perfect mate must be tolerant of brooding, stubbornness, occasional sulking, frequent bossy tendencies, and workaholic hours. Prone to muttering in Gaelic. Favorite epithet: “Holy hell.”

Hero #2

Single male Scottish vampire seeks not a damn thing you have to offer. Age: 400-plus. Six-eight, 285 pounds, close-cropped black hair, gray eyes. Heavily tattoed. Enjoys working with weights and tinkering with vintage motorcycles. Uses kitchen cabinets to store cycle parts and tools. Secretly enjoys Western movies and TV shows. Mate must be tolerant of foul language, mulish behavior, inability to dress himself properly, and occasional late nights ending in the need to clean off blood- and gore-encrusted sword. Keeps chain mail and battle axe in wardrobe. Favorite epithet: “F*** me.”

Hero #3

Single male American vampire, turned at age 22, seeks a good time. Age: 60ish. Six feet, sun-streaked blond hair, golden-brown eyes, dimples. Enjoys classic rock music (thinks Jimi Hendrix is king), trying out new technology, and debating history, politics, music, or art. Debating, period. Loves to talk. Mate must be tolerant of constant chatter, incessant teasing, smartass remarks, difficulty in expressing serious feelings, and dysfunctional, homicidal, family members. Might have daddy issues..

Now…which heroine best fits which hero?

Heroine A:

Single human female, Native American descent. Five-six, weight none of your business, black hair, brown eyes. Enjoys cooking and hopes to one day open a restaurant. Current job: convenience store clerk. Bad habit: babbles nonstop when nervous. Mate must be able to tolerate independent thinking, stubbornness, ability to see through lies and subterfuge, brutal honesty, and a tendency to make objects fly through the air like projectiles when angry.

Heroine B:

Single vampire female, turned at age 25 about five years ago. Red hair, hazel eyes, fair complexion. Former Army infantry soldier with combat training. Enjoys strategizing, tactical deliberations, and issuing orders. Mate must be able to appreciate order and discipline, be prepared to be challenged on every decision, ignore abrupt behavior and extreme suspiciousness, tolerate the music of Brad Paisley, and accept a family full of overprotective male human relations, all with military training.

Heroine C:

Single human female, age 26. Dark auburn hair, brown eyes, heart-shaped face. Five-nine and slender. Enjoys crossword puzzles and reading. Occupation: physician, internal medicine, fresh out of residency. Mate must tolerate extreme independence, a streak of goody two-shoes-ism, a habit of overthinking things, and a tendency toward abrupt violence when confronted with overbearing males. Has been known to use table forks as weapons and is handy with a shotgun.

[Answer key: Hero #1, Aidan, goes with Heroine C, Krystal. Since she hates being controlled, she didn’t respond well to being kidnapped and locked in an underground suite…which is how Aidan got stabbed with a table fork. She didn’t shoot him, however. She shot his brother….Hero #2, Mirren, goes with Heroine A, Glory. He hates being talked to, and she chatters nonstop because he makes her nervous. So he has to give her mouth something else to do to shut her up. Heh….Hero #3, Will, pairs up with Heroine B, Randa. He thinks she’s a hardass; she thinks he’s a smartass. They’re both kind of right. REDEMPTION

Book One Penton Legacy series
By Susannah Sandlin

Following a worldwide pandemic whose vaccine left human blood deadly to vampires, the vampire community is on the verge of starvation and panic. Some have fanned into rural areas, where the vaccine was less prevalent, and are taking unsuspecting humans as blood slaves. Others are simply starving, which for a vampire is worse than death—a raging hunger in a creature too weak to feed.

Immune to these struggles—at first—is Penton, a tiny community in rural Chambers County, Alabama, an abandoned cotton mill town that has been repopulated by charismatic vampire Aidan Murphy, his scathe of 50 vampires, and their willingly bonded humans. Aidan has recruited his people carefully, believing in a peaceful community where the humans are respected and the vampires retain a bit of their humanity.

But an unresolved family feud and the paranoia of the Vampire Tribunal descend on Penton in the form of Aidan’s brother, Owen Murphy. Owen has been issued a death warrant that can only be commuted if he destroys Penton—and Aidan, against whom he’s held a grudge since both were turned vampire in 17th-century Ireland. Owen begins a systematic attack on the town, first killing its doctor, then attacking one of Aidan’s own human familiars

To protect his people, Aidan is forced to go against his principles and kidnap an unvaccinated human doctor—and finds himself falling in love for the first time since the death of his wife in Ireland centuries ago.

Dr. Krystal Harris, forced into a world she never knew existed, must face up to her own abusive past to learn if the feelings she’s developing for her kidnapper are real—or just a warped, supernatural kind of Stockholm Syndrome in which she’s allowing herself to become a victim yet again.

ABSOLUTION

The Penton Legacy, Book 2
By Susannah Sandlin
October 9, 2012
Montlake Romance

Book Description:

With the vampire world on the brink of civil war over the scarcity of untainted human blood, battle lines are being drawn between the once peaceful vampire and human enclave of Penton, Alabama, and the powerful Vampire Tribunal.

A Scottish gallowglass warrior turned vampire in the early 17th century, Mirren Kincaid once served the Tribunal as its most creative and ruthless executioner—a time when he was known as the Slayer. But when assigned a killing he found questionable, Mirren abandoned the Tribunal’s political machinations and disappeared—only to resurface two centuries later as the protector and second-in-command of Penton. Now the Tribunal wants him back on their side—or dead.

To break their rogue agent, they capture Glory Cummings, the descendant of a shaman, and send her to restore Mirren’s bloodthirsty nature. But instead of a monster, Glory sees a man burdened by the weight of his past. Could her magic touch—meant by the tribunal to bring out a violent killer—actually help Mirren break his bonds and discover the love he doesn’t believe he deserves?

It’s a town under siege, a powerful warrior in a battle with his past, and one woman who can make the earth move—literally—as the Penton Legacy continues.
